Wellness & Integrated Student Supports

The community school approach recognizes that academic success is closely linked to the overall well-being of students. Community schools address both academic and non-academic barriers to learning. By prioritizing wellness, community schools create an environment that supports the physical, mental, and emotional health of students through strategic partnerships with social service organizations and city agencies.

This approach includes a range of initiatives such as providing access to nutritious meals, dental and vision care, promoting physical activity, offering mental health services such as individual and group counseling, and fostering a positive and inclusive school culture. Many NYC community schools have school-based mental health clinics that provide timely services to students and families. Some services may be provided at the school and others through referral systems. Offerings are customized to the school and community based on the results of a comprehensive assets and needs assessment, and systems are put in place to ensure that services are targeted to the students who need them the most.

Community schools also recognize that families may need additional support for their children to thrive. Many community schools offer housing assistance, immigration services, workforce development training, and adult educational programs based on the community’s needs. By integrating these diverse supports, NYC community schools strive to create a holistic approach to education that ensures all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
